Do you know what the RSM rule for reversing is? We tell you what it consists of and when this manoeuvre is permitted.
Using the car’s reverse gear is essential for parking manoeuvres or changing the direction of the vehicle. This is a complicated manoeuvre that must be performed according to the RSM rule. We explain what it consists of and how it must be carried out in order to drive safely.
The RSM rule for reversing guarantees, according to the General Directorate of Traffic, that the manoeuvre is safe for the driver and the rest of the occupants of the road, and also, by carrying out this practice, you will make it much easier. We tell you what each of the acronyms consists of and how to perform the manoeuvre correctly.
- Rear-view mirror: the first thing you should do before reversing is to check the rear-view mirror as many times as necessary. This way you can make sure that there are no dangers around you so that you can carry out the manoeuvre.
- Signalling: you must always indicate your movements, which is why signalling is essential so that pedestrians and other drivers can see what your intention is. For this purpose, vehicles have a white light on the rear of the vehicle to indicate that you are reversing. If this does not work, or your vehicle does not have one, you should signal the manoeuvre through the window, with your arm stretched out horizontally with the palm of your hand facing backwards.
- Manoeuvre: you can then carry out the reversing manoeuvre, keeping an eye out for other vehicles and pedestrians at all times to avoid any problems.
When is it possible to reverse?
Following the RSM rule for compulsory reversing does not mean that this manoeuvre can always be carried out in all situations. We will show you under what circumstances it can be carried out, as it is strictly regulated and is included in the Traffic and Road Safety Law, specifically in article 31.
This states that it is forbidden to drive in reverse on any road, but that this manoeuvre can be used in certain exceptions, which are not subject to a fine:
- When there is no other option: you can use reverse gear when it is not possible to continue forwards, turn or make a U-turn in order to be able to continue driving.
- Parking: Reversing can be used as a complementary manoeuvre for parking or stopping, and also when it is necessary to enter the road while the vehicle is stationary or parked.
- Only 15 metres: you may not travel a distance of more than 15 metres in reverse gear. You may not cross a junction during this distance either, as this could lead to a serious accident.
- Not allowed on motorways and dual carriageways: For safety reasons, reversing is not allowed on these types of roads, as reversing can lead to collisions.
