What is a motorcycle catalytic converter?
A motorcycle catalytic converter is a part whose function is to reduce the polluting emissions produced by the motorcycle. It works as a filter that is capable of transforming the harmful exhaust gases into substances with less harmful particles for the environment: carbon dioxide and water vapor.
How does the catalytic converter work?
Catalytic converters rely on redox reactions to restrict toxic gases reaching the atmosphere. This is made possible by the structure of the catalyst itself and the materials from which it is made.
The inside of the catalyst consists of a honeycomb structure made of ceramic. This is coated with catalyst substances. Ceramic is a non-reactive product and is capable of being maintained at a very high temperature, which is conducive to the reaction process. This surface is coated with metals that act as catalyst substances: platinum, palladium and rhodium. Toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and unburned fuel are converted by these metals into safer gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen. Also, some is converted to water.
Types of catalysts

However, it is important to know that this type of device needs to operate at high temperatures, so it is not effective when the engine is cold. To solve this problem, they are placed very close to the engine so that the hot gases can help it reach its optimum operating temperature.
Is it possible to remove the catalytic converter from a motorcycle?
It is possible to remove the catalytic converter from a motorcycle, but doing so may have many disadvantages that you should know. The purpose of this type of parts is to reduce emissions, so if you remove it, these will increase and you may have a serious inconvenience when it comes to passing the MOT. How to clean the motorcycle catalytic converter?

How to clean the catalytic converter step by step
First of all, you will have to locate the catalytic converter, it is usually located at the end of the exhaust pipe, between the manifolds and the tailpipe. You will see that it has a ceramic structure that is easy to identify.
- Disassemble the catalytic converter: to do this you must release all the fasteners of the exhaust pipe, these are usually metal clamps. Then pull the catalytic converter carefully to disengage it.
- Clean the catalytic converter: you can do this by using a pressurized water hose. Place a bucket under the part to catch the dirty water. First, give the part a few light taps. This will help you remove the accumulated particles. Then use the hose to do the cleaning.
- Dry the catalytic converter: It is important that the catalytic converter dries completely, so it is recommended that you leave it for a while before reassembling it.
